Puzzle Quilt

Instructor Paula Nadelstern
A Puzzle Quilt is a sampler with a secret: each block design is used twice. By using different fabric combinations, an illusion is created because each block appears unique. The “puzzle” is to pick out which two are the same. I promise: after this class you will see the possibilities in patterned fabric in a new way.
This class is aimed at the quilter who wants to embrace the potential offered by a wide range of fabric choices rather than be overwhelmed by it. The focus is on design, specifically learning to use fabric in unexpected ways. The two-day format provides time for both process, product and to ask lots of What If questions, which often turn out to be the take-away lessons that lead to satisfying solutions. Also, in a group setting, seeing what others make is almost as good as making it yourself.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Skill Levels.

There are no sewing machines provided or required for all classes during this seminar.

Flower Blossoms

Instructor Sue Nickels
Sue’s quilt called “Flower Blossoms” is a unique appliqué wall quilt with an Asian feel! This four-block quilt uses Japanese floral motifs and Asian themed fabric .In class, students will work on the preparation of the 4 blocks using Sue’s stitched raw edge appliqué technique.

This technique uses a small amount of fusible to seal the edge yet leaves the block soft. Sue uses machine applique to stitch the blocks. Learn the details for machine stitching in video format and stitch your blocks once you are home. Students will receive the appliqué patterns as well as the piecing instructions for the quilt. This quilt also features some great hand embellishments and students will learn how to add interest to the project with beads, buttons and embroidery. Enjoy two days with Sue and go home with a great memory quilt. Kit for this project includes all fabric*, fusible, threads and pattern to complete the quilt top (a small practice block is included in the kit to learn the hand embellishing).

*Fabrics may vary from photo depending on availability.

Kit fee: $40.00

Skill Level: Fun for all (perfect for all levels of experience).

Sixty-Thirty Kaleidoscope

Instructor Paula Nadelstern

This product and process class is extremely satisfying and engaging, culminating in the creation of unique and fabulous kaleidoscope blocks.

Often effects more wonderful than you imagine occur, making you both the one who made the magic and the one who is surprised. Students will learn to draft perfect angles, make templates, and prepare multiple blocks to sew together.  We’ll explore the possibilities offered by complex textiles while demystifying the nature of symmetry.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Skill Levels.

There are no sewing machines provided or required for all classes during this seminar.

Japanese Floral Purse

Instructor Sue Nickels

Wool is used to create a beautiful hand appliqued quilt project. Sue’s Japanese inspired original design makes a wonderful small purse to be used as sewing kit or small bag.

Use paper-backed fusible web and a hand blanket stitch to create the front of the purse and add hand embellishments for a more personalized touch. A kit will be provided for students to make this a fun project to remember your Japan/South Korea Cruise. Kit includes all fabric (wool and cotton), fusible, threads, and pattern to complete the purse project.

Kit fee: $40.00

Skill Level: Fun for all (perfect for all levels of experience)

Class notes: Holding a quilt seminar on a cruise ship is a unique experience. Sometimes there are space and time challenges that prevent our being able to be “project oriented” and we must concentrate more on process. It is very unlikely that you will have an absolutely finished project at the end of a class. It is helpful if your expectations match these realities. But regardless of how far you are able to progress, our instructors are professionals—some of the best in the quilting world—and we know you will learn many new techniques and have a wonderful experience!
