Students will also learn the basics of hand appliqué in addition to a demonstration on how to mimic the elegance of hand appliqué with some freezer paper, a little bit of starch and their sewing machines. The border treatment is the focus of the second day. Students will learn advanced techniques that will take their quilt to the next level. Whether you are into hand appliqué or machine appliqué, this class is for you!

Alaskan Landscape

Instructor Sally Manke
The adventurous quilter of all skill levels will learn how to use color and proportion to create depth, highlights and texture to your one-of-a kind art quilt. Create a realistic Alaskan landscape scene with confetti cut fabrics “painted” on quilt batting. Layers and layers of tiny bits of batik, hand dyed, and solid fabrics create your pallet. Fussy cut trees, rocks and flowers are added before topping with a layer of tulle. Bring a hard copy photo to work from or borrow one from the instructor. Contact Sally prior to sailing for photo options.

Applique Glacier Bay

Instructor Jaimie Davis

Join Jaimie in this one-day workshop and discover the secrets of making quilted landscapes.

Not only will you learn how to construct this stunning souvenir quilt, but you will also learn how to make it your own. Do you prefer raw-edge or turned edge appliqué? Do you prefer the Aurora Borealis to the Milky Way? Would you like a simple, straightforward project or something a little more complicated? Whatever your preferences, Jaimie will teach you how to think like a designer and show you how to play to your strengths – you will discover that it isn’t nearly as hard as you imagined. And with her quick and easy glue technique, you can construct the quilt on the ship and both stitch it and quilt it at the same time at home. Flexible and easy paced, this workshop promises to be a lot of fun.

Flower Basket

Instructor Sally Manke
Explore two types of appliqué as you create this Flower Basket Art Quilt. Weave basket with easy-peasy turned edge appliqué using bias scraps or a fat quarter. Fill the basket with raw edge appliqué flowers, leaves and vines. All the components come together with bonding agents on a pieced background or fat quarter to highlight your work. Scrap friendly project to use your scrappy stash. Embellish your work to add texture and depth. Use sari silk ribbon, specialty yarns, metallic thread, ribbon, wool, beads, buttons and so much more.

Class notes: Holding a quilt seminar on a cruise ship is a unique experience. Sometimes there are space and time challenges that prevent our being able to be “project oriented” and we must concentrate more on process. It is very unlikely that you will have an absolutely finished project at the end of a class. It is helpful if your expectations match these realities. But regardless of how far you are able to progress, our instructors are professionals—some of the best in the quilting world—and we know you will learn many new techniques and have a wonderful experience!
